Understanding Soil pH: A Simple Testing Guide for Home Gardeners

The first time one of us bought a cheap digital pH meter, it was because a batch of chili seedlings kept yellowing despite regular watering and a decent potting mix. We assumed overwatering. It turned out the compost we'd mixed in was noticeably acidic — pH 5.2 — and the chilies simply couldn't absorb the nutrients already sitting in the soil. That single ten-minute test saved us an entire growing season of guessing.

Why Soil pH Actually Matters

Soil pH measures how acidic or alkaline your soil is, on a scale of 0 (very acidic) to 14 (very alkaline), with 7 being neutral. It's not just a number for chemistry textbooks — pH directly controls how available nutrients are to plant roots, even when those nutrients are physically present in the soil.

Most vegetables, flowers, and herbs prefer a slightly acidic to neutral range, roughly 6.0 to 7.0. Outside that window, specific nutrients become chemically "locked up" in forms roots can't absorb, even if your compost and fertilizer routine is otherwise perfect. This is exactly what happened with our chili seedlings — the nutrients were there, but the acidic soil made them unavailable.

Signs Your Soil pH Might Be Off

Before you even test, certain patterns hint at a pH problem rather than a watering or pest problem:

• Yellowing leaves with green veins (often a sign of iron deficiency caused by high pH/alkaline soil)
• Stunted growth despite regular fertilizing
• Poor flowering or fruiting even with adequate sunlight and water
• Certain plants thriving while others in the same general area struggle, despite similar care

We've now learned to test pH first whenever we see unexplained yellowing that isn't clearly a watering issue — it's a faster diagnosis than ruling out pests, watering, and light one by one.

Three Ways to Test — What We Actually Use

1. Digital pH Meter (What We Recommend)

We switched to a simple digital probe meter after using cheaper strip kits for a year, and the difference in reliability was noticeable. To use one properly:

• Water the soil lightly the day before testing — bone-dry soil gives inaccurate readings
• Insert the probe about 3–4 inches into the soil, away from the pot's edge
• Wait 60 seconds for the reading to stabilize before recording it
• Test in 2–3 different spots in the same pot or bed and average the readings — soil pH can vary even within a single container

We've found cheap meters can drift over time; ours needed recalibrating with a pH 7 buffer solution every few months to stay accurate, something the packaging didn't clearly mention.

2. Litmus/pH Strip Kits

These work by mixing a small soil sample with distilled water, then dipping a strip and comparing the color to a chart. They're cheaper and require no batteries, but we found them noticeably less precise — useful for a rough acidic/neutral/alkaline read, less useful for fine adjustments.

3. The Baking Soda and Vinegar Home Test (Rough Estimate Only)

This is the free, no-equipment version, useful only as a very rough first check:

1. Take two small soil samples in separate containers
2. Add vinegar to the first — if it fizzes, your soil is likely alkaline
3. Add water to the second sample to make mud, then add baking soda — if it fizzes, your soil is likely acidic
4. No reaction in either test suggests your soil is close to neutral

We tried this ourselves alongside a digital meter for comparison, and it correctly identified the general direction (acidic vs. alkaline) but gave no useful number — fine for a first gut-check, not for deciding how much amendment to add.

What Our Own Testing Found Across Different Setups

Over the past two years we've tested pH across several different containers and one small ground plot, and the variation surprised us:

Fresh cocopeat-based potting mix: tested around 6.3–6.6, comfortably in range for most vegetables
Compost-heavy mix, freshly made from kitchen waste: tested more acidic, around 5.5–5.8, likely because it hadn't fully matured
Soil reused from a previous tomato crop without amendment: tested at 5.2, noticeably more acidic than fresh mix — this matched the yellowing chili plants that prompted this whole investigation
Ground soil near an older concrete wall: tested alkaline at 7.8, likely due to lime leaching from the concrete over time

The pattern we've noticed: reused potting soil tends to drift acidic over successive growing seasons unless actively corrected, since plants and microbial activity gradually acidify it.

How We Actually Adjust pH (Organic Methods Only)

To Raise pH (Make Soil Less Acidic)

We use crushed eggshells (saved and dried from the kitchen) or garden lime, mixed into the top few inches of soil. In our reused tomato soil test above (pH 5.2), mixing in roughly 2 tablespoons of finely crushed eggshell per medium pot and watering it in raised the reading to about 6.1 over three weeks. Wood ash also works but we use it sparingly, since it's easy to overcorrect and push pH too high.

To Lower pH (Make Soil More Acidic)

For the alkaline ground soil (7.8) near our concrete wall, we mixed in additional compost and a small amount of used coffee grounds, which brought the reading down to roughly 7.2 after about a month. Elemental sulfur is a stronger, faster option for larger beds, but we haven't needed it for our container-scale gardening.

In both directions, the key lesson from our testing: changes happen gradually over weeks, not overnight. Retesting every 2–3 weeks after amending, rather than adding more amendment immediately, avoided the overcorrection mistake we made once with wood ash.

How Often Should You Actually Test?

Based on what we've observed, testing once at the start of a new potting mix or bed, then again every 3–4 months for containers in regular use, has been enough to catch drift before it visibly affects plants. We test more frequently only when we notice unexplained yellowing or stunted growth that doesn't match an obvious watering or light issue.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do all plants need the same pH range? No. Most vegetables and flowers prefer 6.0–7.0, but some plants have specific preferences — for example, we've read that blueberries prefer more acidic soil (around 4.5–5.5), though we haven't grown blueberries ourselves to confirm this directly.

Can I use tap water for the test? We specifically use distilled or filtered water for strip and DIY tests, since tap water's own mineral content can skew results. For digital meters, this matters less since they measure the soil directly rather than a water-soil slurry.

How fast does pH change after amending? In our own tracked cases above, meaningful change took 3–4 weeks, not days. Anyone expecting an overnight fix from a single application of lime or sulfur will likely be disappointed — and risk overcorrecting by adding more too soon.

Is a cheap meter accurate enough? Ours has been reliable for practical, this-pot-versus-that-pot comparisons, provided we recalibrate it periodically. For scientific precision, a lab soil test is more accurate, but for home gardening decisions, a decent digital meter has been sufficient in our experience.

What We'd Tell a First-Time Tester

Test before you assume a watering or pest problem, especially with unexplained yellowing. It took us a full growing season of trial and error with those chili seedlings to realize the soil chemistry, not our watering schedule, was the actual issue. A single, cheap pH test would have told us that in ten minutes.
